The Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) was opened on April 6, 2020, to support Canadians in the challenging COVID-19 situation. The emergency aid provides taxable payment of $2000 monthly, to people who meet the eligibility criteria.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau firstly announced that financial support will be extended for the next two months as the economy continues to take a gradual pace.
Secondly, he mentioned that the people getting CERB will continue to get help if they still can’t work due to less jobs.
Besides, he said that moving forward the government is looking at the “international best practices”. Moreover, they will monitor the economy and the progression of the virus to make a change in CERB to support the people further.
Further, he said that 3 million people out of work are looking for work. However, as the economy is reopening, there are many more people willing to work but out of work, than the number of jobs available.
