Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) Updates 2020

COVID-19 is taking the world by storm and several international students are anxious. Will the shift from regular classroom courses to an online system affect their Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility? What is a PGWP? A PGWP is an official document that allows you to stay in Canada after graduation and work. The Post Graduate Work Permit allows students one year to three years after graduation to gain Canadian work experience. Work experience and education in Canada help students well integrate in the labor market. They also have higher chances of receiving a PR invitation. PGWP before COVID-19 Earlier, international students must have studied fulltime in a program in Canada at least eight months to qualify for PGWP. But recently, there have been some reforms made by the Government of Canada. The Government has tried to make its immigration policies more flexible even though this is a temporary effort. PGWP after COVID-19 Amidst preventative measures of Coronavirus, many programs have assumed an online presence. PGWP eligibility is being offered to students enrolled in such programs by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This applies to students who have a study permit and begin a new program this May or June as well. Students outside Canada can continue their education online for up to half of their program due to the travel restrictions. Furthermore, they won’t have time deducted from the length of a future post-graduation work license. Effective for coursework finished outside of Canada, up to December 31, 2020. In a nutshell, international students commencing programs in the coming weeks online will not suffer drawbacks. Did you know? Nearly 60% students depend on PGWP as a steppingstone paving way to the PR process in Canada. International students who have their hopes and dreams built around Canada will receive the IRCC’s temporary amends well. In 2018, nearly 54,000 former students became permanent residents in Canada and they make up for 170, 000 jobs alone.
