Differences between private colleges and public colleges

College study abroad is recommended for those who want to find employment or immigrate in Canada, or want to study a specialized field overseas. There are two types of colleges in Canada, private colleges and public colleges, but many of you may not know what the difference is. Here, we will explain in detail the differences between public colleges and private colleges, comparing their characteristics and admission requirements. Please use it as a reference when deciding your goals and study abroad style.

Private College

It is also called a career college and is positioned as a vocational school in Japan. Learn the expertise needed to work as an intern in a short period of time and earn a Certificate or Diploma qualification.

If you wish to obtain a visa that will lead to permanent residence, we recommend that you go to a public college. Private colleges are recommended for those who want to study abroad in a co-op, gain work experience in Canada, and utilize it for their career in Japan, or if they want to stay in Canada for as long as possible.

Benefits of Private Colleges

  • 1. The hurdle of admission is low

Although it depends on the school, the TOEFL (iBT) score is 32 points and the IELTS score is 4.5, which is lower than the standard of English proficiency required for admission compared to public colleges. Also, by taking an English program at the attached language school, you can go on to college even if you do not have the required English score at the time of admission.

  • 2. There are many timings for admission

Since the enrollment period is longer than that of public colleges and universities, you can flexibly plan your study abroad at your own convenience.

  • 3. Tuition is cheaper than Public Colleges

Tuition fees for private colleges are almost half that of public colleges. Also, studying abroad at a private college in Canada is a more realistic option, as it costs less than half the tuition fees of a community college in the United States. You can work while you are still in school, and you can work full-time in the second half of the internship, so you can save a lot of money on studying abroad compared to public colleges.

  • 4. Small group system with easy guidance

Private colleges are smaller than community colleges and have smaller classes. It has the advantage of being able to give detailed guidance to each student and making it easier for students to speak.

  • 5. Learn specialized programs in a short period of time

Community colleges also require academics such as general education, but private colleges specialize in learning more practical and work-required expertise, so in a short period of a few months to two years, a Certificate or You can get a Diploma degree.

  • 6. Useful for finding a job because you can choose a program (department) that is directly linked to the field you want to study.

You will be able to choose a program that is directly linked to the field you want to study, such as business, hospitality, medical office work, IT, etc., so you will acquire practical skills and help you find a job.

  • 7. Acquire practical professional skills because there is a program called Co-op program that includes work experience.

Most private colleges, with some exceptions, have a work experience system called Co-op. Therefore, the specialized skills learned in school classes can be put into practice at a local company as they are, and practical skills can be acquired.

Public Colleges

Public colleges are also known as community colleges, and colleges in Canada generally refer to these public colleges. You can acquire skills that are useful for finding employment. There are more areas to study than private colleges, and some courses offer degrees such as Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, and Bachelor. You can also apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit, which allows you to work for up to 3 years after graduation, which can be used to apply for immigration. If you want to get a job at a local Canadian company in the future and are looking to immigrate to Canada, we recommend attending a public college.

Benefits of Public College

  • 1. Learn a wider range of specialized skills

With over 100 programs offered at many colleges, you can learn expertise in a variety of disciplines such as business, trade, electrical engineering, hospitality, design and early childhood education.

  • 2. There are more international students

Most of them are international students so you will get a chance to know better other cultures and people all over the world.

  • 3. After graduation, you can apply for a Work Visa (PGWP) for up to 3 years, which can easily lead to permanent residence in Canada

As mentioned above, after graduation you can apply for a work visa called Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). This visa allows you to work for up to 3 years, which is a great advantage for subsequent immigration applications.

  • 4. Easy to transfer to University

In order to enter a Canadian university with a high level of education from Japan, it is necessary to clear high school grades, TOEFL scores, etc. at a high level. University transfer courses are available at public colleges. After earning certain credits at college, you can transfer to the second or third year of college, saving you money. Recommended for those who are not confident in their English ability or high school grades.
